Funding requests from some local sports groups, as well as the volunteer fire department, were approved by Harbour Grace council at its March 24 public meeting.

Finance committee chairman and councillor Gordon Stone laid out the requests. Council agreed to donate $50 each to the Cee Bees Minor Hockey Association for an advertisement in the U18 Provincial Tournament Handbook; the Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels Senior Boys Volleyball Team to help it attend the Volleyball Canada Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta; and to the CBN Skating Club for its annual ice show.

Stone’s next motion pertained to the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade. With new standards in place for bunker gear to better protect firefighters against cancer risks, Stone moved that council support the brigade in trying to get 10 sets of new bunker gear, specifically coats and pants.

“I move on behalf of the committee that the Town pay the ten percent partnership share in the funding application of the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade’s 2025 application for new sets of fire coats and pants in the amount of $4,863,” said Stone.

The motion passed unanimously.
