CBS seeking federal money for bike racks, kayak launches, rec works

By Craig Westcott

There are no set plans as to how to spend it just yet, but the Town of CBS is applying for nearly $2 million in funding for future recreation-related construction.
Councillor-at-large Joshua Barrett made the motion to apply for $1.85 million in cost-shared funding through the federal Active Transportation Program.
“The Town of Conception Bay South agrees to provide its share of cost-shared funding in the amount of $671,058 net of HST rebate,” said Barrett in stating the motion to seek the money.
“We had much success with this fund last year, or the last time we applied,” Barrett noted. “Folks might remember we were successful in getting $1.4 million to upgrade the T’Railway and the trestle in Seal Cove, and we’re very optimistic about our submission this year. While we don’t have a big project like that identified, there are a number of things throughout the community that we want to make a more active living type of arrangement, whether it’s installing more accessibility for bike racks, kayaks, running, some of those things. So, if successful, you’ll see a lot of those changes throughout the town from Topsail all the way to Seal Cove. We’re certainly optimistic about this, and hopefully history repeats itself and we’re successful with the funding application.”
