Holyrood making progress on recreation projects

The Town of Holyrood is moving full steam ahead on a number of recreation projects, as per a recreation update provided by councillor Sadie King during last week’s public council meeting.

King said the Town has purchased new fencing to be installed at the community garden this spring. It also plans to buy compost bins and sell them to residents at cost.

Work is also ongoing at the softball field. The extension has been completed, new fencing has been installed and new sod has been laid. King said the Town hopes to have lighting installed later this year.

King also noted that a concept design and land survey for the new community centre have both been completed. The Town has received $908,060 in multi-year capital works funding for the building. A public consultation session will be held before construction begins.

Also on the recreation front, Recreation Director Kyle Hawco will travel to Grand Falls-Windsor for the 2025 Recreation NL annual general meeting and conference set for April 29 to May 1.

“The committee recommends sending our director, because that is where you pick up a lot of information, and a lot of networking can come from these conferences,” said King.

The cost for the trip, including all expenses, is budgeted at $1,150, which will be expensed to the recreation budget.

“These are great conferences, as we’ve learned from the past,” said Mayor Gary Goobie. “There’s a lot of information that you can get at these conferences. It’s great, and it’s a benefit for the town.”
