Both attendance and revenue are up at the Carbonear pool this year.

Recreation Director Rob Button told council the swimming pool has made almost $30,000 more in revenue this year compared to 2023. Visitation has increase by about six thousand compared to last year. Button said that students from both Carbonear Academy and Carbonear Collegiate have been active at the Town’s facilities this fall. Members of the Special Olympics are also availing Carbonear’s swimming pool this fall.

“They’ve had good attendance so far, so it’s good to see them using our facility again,” said Button.

He added the Swim Club has started up again and Carbonear is hosting the first meet of the season, which includes five teams and over 220 swimmers.

In other recreation related news, Mayor Frank Butt encouraged residents to get out and enjoy the events that make up Carbonear’s Harvest Festival, which ran from October 1 to November 1. Festival events included musical performances, painting nights, art sales, and more. Butt made special mention of the Multicultural Feast, which took place on October 23 and featured food from different countries and cultures.

October 23 was also the date of the Harvest Run, an annual track and field tournament that draws students from throughout the Avalon for competition in Carbonear. The tournament has been held every year for some two decades.

The mayor pointed out that November 1 marked the town’s first holding of Football Under the Lights. Football is a growing sport in Newfoundland, Butt said, noting he had visited a football pitch in Paradise. “They come out here to play and we go in (there). They go back and forth so that’s why I recognize that,” said Butt.

Bonfire Night, meanwhile, was scheduled to take place, as usual, on November 5 with special activities near Paddy’s Garden.
