This summer, residents of the town of Carbonear came together, got active, and won the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

This was the fifth edition of the challenge, which is a national physical activity and sport program that encourages Canadians to get physically active throughout the month of June. Carbonear was crowned Newfoundland and Labrador’s most active community, and placed within the top 50 most active communities in Canada.
Mayor Frank Butt said the win demonstrated “the true essence of community” in Carbonear.

The town had been battling head-to-head for the title with Paradise.

At last week’s public council meeting, councillors celebrated the victory, which comes with a prize of $15,000 which will be put towards some of the programs in Carbonear’s new recreation master plan.

Deputy Mayor Slade congratulated everyone who contributed to Carbonear’s win.

“To actually get the prize for $15,000 to go into recreation and whatever else we’re going to spend it on, it’s just a super thing that was done,” said Slade, “and we’re very proud of everyone involved.”
