35th annual SquidFest on the horizon

By Mark Squibb

Holyrood is gearing up once again for its mainstay summer festival, the Squidfest, now in it’s 35th year.

The festivities kick off on July 17 with a celebration at Holy Cross Park, a ticketed surf-and-turf meal at the Station Diner, and a community beach bonfire.
The fun continues all through the weekend, culminating in a fireworks show Sunday evening.

For the young and young at heart, there’s the Squidfest Storytime, Big Rig Rodeo, a meet and greet with Moana, superhero training with Captain America, an outdoor showing of the Disney movie Elemental, a pool party at Holy Cross Park, and a Sunday market.

Adults can partake of a wine and cheesecake night, the Best Kind Comedy Show, an 8K road race, and beach party, which are all ticketed events.
Folks may also like to attend a seniors’ BBQ and dance, an open house at The Launch, and the Cemetery Mass at Holy Cross Parish.

The 29th annual HMCS St. John’s and Make-A-Wish Foundation Run The Rock crew will pass through Holyrood on July 16 and serve as a sort of unofficial prelude to the Squidfest festivities.

The group is trekking across the province to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
