Mounties and firemen bash it out for charity in Bay Roberts

By Mark Squibb

Members of the Bay Roberts Fire Rescue and Trinity Conception RCMP detachments went toe-to-toe for bragging rights and a good cause at the annual Guns N’ Hoses charity hockey game March 16 at the Bay Arena.

Proceeds from the night went to the Bay Roberts Primary and Amalgamated Academy school breakfast programs.

Councillors gave one another a good ribbing about the outcome, led by Mayor Walter Yetman who allowed the RCMP “pummelled” the volunteer firefighters 7-3.

Dean Franey, a member of the fire department, joked that the Mounties must have flown in some extra reinforcements for the weekend.

Yetman himself actually played for the firefighters, as they were short a few bodies, and councillor Silas Badcock said he had heard the mayor was the best player on the team.

Franey said he considered Yetman as maybe the third or fourth best player on the team.

Yetman, meanwhile, said the talk round town was that the RCMP took it easy on the volunteer fire department, and that the outcome could have been a lot worse.

Whatever the outcome, students were the big winners — the teams raised some $2,600 for the breakfast programs.

That donation, as is the custom, will be matched by the provincial government.
