CBS hoping for another Green Team

By Mark Squibb

The Town of CBS is hoping to once again secure a Green Team for this upcoming summer.
During the February 6 public council meeting, economic development and tourism chairperson Christine Butler moved that council apply to the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Green Team Program for 2024 funding.
“Over the past 18 plus years the Town of Conception Bay South has hosted a four-person Green Team during the summer months to work with the CBS Parks Commission on a variety of initiatives,” explained Butler. “This program has provided valuable work experience for the youth participants, as well as much needed hands-on support for the member groups of the Parks Commission, and we are hopeful to be successful in our bid for a team in 2024.”
Over the years, Green Teams in CBS have completed environmental assessments, constructed fences and boardwalks, and planted gardens, among other activities.
Through the Green Team program, the Conservation Corps has hired over 3,000 young people across the province since 1993.
The Parks Commission includes the CBS Community Garden Initiative, Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program (KEEP), Manuels River Centre, Chamberlains Park Action Committee, and the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast.
