The City of Mount Pearl is providing $15,000 to bolster two of its arts and culture organizations this year.
The move follows recommendations from the recreation and community safety committee which were presented at last week’s public council meeting.
Some $10,000 of the $15,000 approved will go to the Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl (AAMP) as part of its regular operating grant. The committee members reviewed AAMP’s 2022-2023 activities and financial statements before recommending the release of the grant as per a Memorandum of Understanding between the City and the group.
The committee also recommended the release of $5,000 in ‘Milestone Event’ funding to the Mount Pearl Ross King Memorial Public Library for its 35th anniversary celebration event. The event is scheduled for October 14.
Councillor Chelsea Lane said the money will help “acknowledge the importance of the Ross King Memorial Library to the community as well as provide awareness of the programs currently being offered.
“We actually have quite an amazing library here in Mount Pearl,” Lane added. “There’s more foot traffic than ever. So, I think it’s great that they’re going to be scheduling an event and I think that the volunteers there are very deserving of recognition for all that they do, because the volunteers on the library board have been there for a long, long time. I think some of them have been there for upwards of 20 years and the library wouldn’t be where it’s to and functioning so well and thriving if it wasn’t for the volunteers who are involved in that.”
