Harbour Grace recognizes top atheletes

The Harbour Grace Sports Hall of Fame and Sports Museum Committee hosted the Town’s annual awards banquet last week at the Danny Cleary Community Centre.

Representatives handed out a number of awards and also inducted a number of people into the Hall of Fame. The inductions included Alice Hunt and the late Leo Galway for their contribution to recreation in Riverhead, Harbour Grace, as well as the late Christine Moores for her 40-year contribution to the Conception Bay North Figure Skating Club.

The Paul Moriarty Memorial Award was presented to Rich Baker Sr., of the Harbour Grace Regatta while the 1992 Summer Games Scholarship was presented to Andrew Taylor. The U13 Ceebees Minor Hockey team was named Team of the Year.

Jade Bennett was awarded the Junior Female Athlete of the Year and Braeden Sullivan was awarded the Junior Male Athlete of the Year.

Senior Female Athlete of the Year was Lauryn Hunt, while Dylan Whelan was named Senior Male Athlete. Hunt competed in many volleyball tournaments throughout the province and competed in Alberta at a national level. Besides volleyball, Hunt plays soccer, floor hockey, ice hockey, softball, table tennis, and tennis, which she also coaches.

Whelan, meanwhile, competed with the Canada Games Baseball Team at the Summer Games in Niagara Falls in August, and played on the TriPen AAA Osprey hockey team and Gonzaga Senior Baseball team. He also played with the Carbonear Collegiate ice hockey, softball, and ball hockey teams.

Council, meanwhile, presented Mayor and Councilor Recognition awards to David Lynch Jr., of the Earhart 50+ Club, the Family Focus Medical Clinic and the Harbour Grace Sports Hall of Fame Committee.

There were also 10 presentations of historical photographs and sports memorabilia.
