A road by any other name

Bay Roberts council has approved a change of name for the road formerly know as Farm Road.

The matter was initially brought to the council chambers back in November when council decided to put the question to the public.

“We had three pieces of correspondence, and the recommendation is to go with the majority vote, being to change the name of Farm Road, located off of Shearstown Road, to UC Cemetery Road,” said Mayor Walter Yetman during last week’s meeting.

Councillor Dean Franey moved the motion, and councillor Frank Deering seconded it.

“There’s a cemetery in there, and that’s probably going to be the only thing in there,” summarised Deering. “So, I think this is a good choice.”

Councillor Silas Badcock said he was glad council took the time to ask the public for input.

Councillor Perry Bowering wondered whether the road shouldn’t be called United Church Cemetery Road, though Town CAO Nigel Black said that might be a bit long of a name for a sign.

The motion to change the name to UC Cemetery Road passed unanimously.

The town’s other Farm Road, the one off the main thoroughfare through town, remains Farm Road. It was the fact the town had two Farm Roads that prompted the need to change the name of one of them.
