Carbonear approves phase two of Water Street upgrades

The Town of Carbonear approved phase two of Water Street water, sewer, and street upgrades during Wednesday’s public meeting.

Council awarded the contract to Black Diamond Construction at a price tag of $1.3 million, The vote was unanimous and proceeded without further discussion.

The provincial and federal governments announced funding for phase two of the project in a joint press release issued on April 1 of last year, but work was delayed due to a specs update which meant the tender didn’t get out in time. Council had hoped that work would be tendered and shovels in the ground by July.

The provincial government provided $326,820 in funding, while the federal government ponied up $849,730 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Innovative Communities Fund.

Phase two will see work done along Water Street from Bannerman Street to PF Finn Street and includes enhanced sidewalks, signage, a community space, murals, fixed furniture, landscaping and lighting.

The Town has already applied for phase three of the work.
