Harbour Grace readying for tax sale

By Mark Squibb/February 10, 2023

The Town of Harbour Grace is preparing for a sale of vacant land.

During last week’s meeting, held virtually via Zoom, Mayor Don Coombs noted that over 50 participants had registered for the meeting, a much higher number than typically tune into the sessions, and later hinted that folks may be watching for news of the tax sale.

“Folks, I’m pleased to say that after a long, long process, our letter has gone to the minister for a tax sale for the public,” said Coombs. “We have a lot of vacant land in the Town of Harbour Grace that the Town felt was no longer of value to the Town. We have a plan for any sale of property, which will go into the economic development of our town, that was agreed to by council.”

He said the costs of surveys and legal fees are to be covered by the purchaser, and he’s hopeful the provincial government will give the Town the right to demand a minimum of 60 percent of the value.

Council did not specific which properties will be up for tax sale.
