New CBS Library to be named for businessman Clarence Morgan

Conception Bay South council has voted to name the new library building under construction at Remembrance Square after local businessman Clarence J. Morgan, who passed away after a lengthy career last fall.
“Earlier this year, the Town realized a call for expressions of interest for the building that will house the Conception Bay South Public Library,” said councilor Gerard Tilley during this week’s public meeting. “The Naming Committee is therefore making a recommendation for council approval to name the building the Clarence J. Morgan Building. Mr. Morgan was all about building community. He believed in education and experiential learning. He worked in partnership with businesses, community organizations, and all levels of government, and was committed to long term fiscal responsibility, sustainability, and livability, in CBS.”
Tilley described Morgan as a cherished family man and prominent businessman.
“We believe naming this building in his honour is a fitting acknowledgment to his life’s work, which was instrumental in helping establish and grow Conception Bay South,” said Tilley. “I personally had the honour to know Mr. Morgan over the years. And this is a well-deserved honour this evening, and I’m sure his family is very, very proud.”
Morgan died on November 28, 2021. The motion to name the building after him was unanimously approved.
During the course of his career, Morgan went from working his way up into senior management with the United Towns and helping to bring telephone service to much of the Avalon, to venturing out on his own with his family in building a number of personal care homes, including Admiralty Coast and Heritage Square, operating a real estate holding company in downtown St. John’s, establishing Villa Nova Plaza, and in later years, overseeing the construction and management of several large medical properties, including in CBS, Holyrood and St. John’s, that are leased to Eastern health.
“To have his name adorn the new public library building here in Conception Bay South, a centerpiece, and a prominent place, is a very fitting way to honour his legacy and his contribution to the Town of Conception Bay South,” said Mayor Darrin Bent.
The Town broke ground on construction of the new library in August, 2021.
