Seal Cove roads to get another lick of asphalt

By Mark Squibb/September 9, 2021

The Town of Conception Bay South has approved a tender for surface course asphalt for portions of Seal Cove that have been patiently waiting to see the paving completed since work began several years ago.

The work is the second part of Phase 47 of the town’s water and sewer program. The underground work was tendered in 2017; however, due to costs, the asphalt work had to wait.

“At the time, the funding did not allow for surface course asphalt,” explained councilor Gerard Tilley during the September 7 council meeting. The Ward 3 councillor chairs the public works committee.

Approximately five kilometers of road will be paved, and repairs will be made to existing asphalt.

The roads include Seaspray Crescent, Seal Cove Road from Civic # 347 to Conception Bay Highway, Indian Pond Drive, Indian Pond Estates, Indian Pond Place, and Allison Road.

Council awarded the tender to Modern Paving Limited for the bid price of $773,870 including HST.

Deputy Mayor Richard Murphy, who is the Ward 4 councillor for that area, expressed his pleasure that the work is finally being done.

“We did have residents express their concerns with the condition of the road,” said Murphy. “The people of Seal Cove area, and especially that particular section will be delighted, and hopefully that work will get done before the cold weather sets in.”

Work is scheduled to commence later this week, and motorists are advised to drive with caution.
