Harbour Grace council is backing the town’s Junior Miss Newfoundland and Labrador contestant Amelia Simmons with a monetary donation.

Simmons, age 10, sent the council a donation request. In her letter she explained that Junior Miss NL contestants are asked to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Simmons and her mother attended the September 14 meeting of council where councillor Christina Hearn told them the Town will certainly support their cause. Later in the meeting council made it official, passing a motion to donate $50.

Mayor Terry Barnes then topped up the amount to $440, thanks to fundraising he had done for Simmons’ cause on his own time. Simmons gave the council a thank you card for their support.

The Junior Miss NL Pageant took place from September 25th to 27th. The talent and public speaking portion of the pageant took place at Harbour Grace’s Splash Centre. Simmons’ talent was performing gymnastics. The gala and crowning took place on September 27th at the Princess Sheila Nageira Theatre.

The Shoreline didn’t have the results of the pageant at press time.
