Abby Chubb picked up a shadow as she hurtled towards the finish line of the Holyrood Crystal Carnival’s Chilly 5K Run, her son Everett, age four, who bolted along behind her near the race’s end. Twins Freya and Kai Hamshere, who will be five in April, and big brother Finn, set up near the finish line at Holy Cross Elementary School to watch the runners in Holyrood’s annual Chilly Dash. The event was held as part of the town’s annual Crystal Carnival and managed to get held before a big snowstorm the next day cancelled the popular Chili Contest and Family Fun Day.
FLEET OF FOOT—The Holyrood Crystal Carnival’s annual 5km Chilly Dash drew a field of 60 runners on February 21 who enjoyed a rare windless morning and temperatures just below freezing, which suited the winner of the race, Ryan Caines of CBS, centre, just fine. “It’s hard on the lungs, but you don’t overheat,” said Caines of winter running. “If it’s 10 or 15 degrees, I overheat. The colder the better for me.” Joining Caines at the finish line were, from left: Phil Crawley of Holyrood who ran a very close fourth to Mark Didham, next, of Paradise, who came third, Mayor Laura Crawley, and Brandon St. Croix of Paradise, who crossed the line in second place. Like last year’s race, Crawley and Didham were at each other’s heels for most of the run. It was the eight-time running the Chilly Dash for Didham. “It’s my favourite one to come out to at the beginning of the year,” said Didham. “It’s a good winter test. And when the weather works out it’s even better.” St. Croix agreed the conditions were excellent. “The wind wasn’t bad,” he said, noting the conditions last year were the worst he ever ran in during a winter race with a layer of snow underfoot from a big snowfall the night before. Crawley remembered the runners also had to look out for people plowing their driveways.

The top female finishers in the Chilly Dash crossed the finish line pretty close on the heels of the fastest male runners. From left are Amy George of Dildo, who placed third in the female division, Sharon Wall of Conception Harbour, who came first, Abby Chubb of Holyrood, who placed second with son Everett, age 4, hot on her heels, and Mayor Laura Crawley.
