Water funding deal could mean more in the pipe for Gateway, CBS mayor hopes

By Mark Squibb

The feds, provincial government, and Town of Conception Bay South are spending a combined $6.8 million to construct new water and sewer lines in CBS.

The lines will service 55 units along Conception Bay Highway in Seal Cove, and allow for construction of new homes, including on Legion Road.

The Province is contributing the biggest chunk, borrowing some $2,721,072, while Ottawa and the Town will borrow and spend $2,040,803 each. The feds portion comes courtesy of the $6 billion Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF).

“This funding will help Conception Bay South support its current and future residents and allow for community growth,” said Avalon MP Paul Connors. “As a former (CBS) councillor, I know that this was one of the most expensive areas to be completed on the Town’s water and sewer priority list. Once this project is completed, the Town can concentrate on funding many of the sideroads that have been on the priority lists for decades. It’s a huge step in the right direction.”

Provincial Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Barry Petten said such infrastructure projects generate revenue opportunities for local companies and workers.

“When provincial, federal and municipal governments work together, we can deliver projects that make a real difference for communities,” he added.

Mayor Darrin Bent told reporters the Town has a backlog of people looking for housing, and developers are eager to build, particularly in Seal Cove.

“This announcement represents a major step forward for housing development in Conception Bay South, and the continued sustainable growth of our community,” said Bent. “This will allow us to see new homes and business built right here… by extending these services we are directly supporting new residential development, including higher density housing in areas prepared for expansion.”

The mayor also hinted at big things to come regarding the Gateway development atop Legion Road, noting the new water infrastructure could aid with future development there.

“Stay tuned,” said Bent when asked about it.

Pressed for details, the mayor would only say that talks are ongoing and that the Town is optimistic.
