Cadets to provide Town with insurance information

By Mark Squibb

Talks are continuing between the Town of Carbonear and representatives of the 589 Air Cadet Squadron after council voted in December to ban the use of air rifles at the Princess Shelia Building on Water Street, citing concerns about insurance coverage.

While the Town maintains it would be held liable should an accident occur, representatives of the squadron say an accident would be covered by their own insurance.

Councillor Peter Snow presented council with an update during the Feb. 10 public council session, following a meeting between Town representatives and squadron members.

“The delegation provided an overview of activities, insurance coverage, and the indemnification provided by their insurance,” said Snow. “A certificate of coverage will be provided, as well as further information that can be provided to the Town’s insurers for further consideration. But just a note to highlight, I don’t think there’s anyone here in council that is prepared to put the Town in a possible liable position, so we have to be very careful with what we’re doing here. I think we’ve been on the right path. We’re certainly open to new information and ideas.”

The cadet corps has been practicing marksmanship in the building for roughly 30 years.
