Harbour Grace looking to change direction of one-way street

Drivers in Harbour Grace will soon have to reverse course on Queen’s Road.

The change of direction on the one-way street comes at the suggestion of the Town’s municipal enforcement officer, said Deputy Mayor Keith Skinner, who chairs council’s public works committee.

At present, Queen’s Road takes drivers from Noad Street to Harvey Street, the latter of which is a main road. However, residents have had issues with cars parking there and obscuring the flow of traffic on Harvey Street.

Skinner said the municipal enforcement officer had recommended council make a motion to get public input regarding a directional change for Queen’s Road. It was further recommended that the change be implemented on a trial basis to ensure the flow of traffic is not negatively affected.

Mayor Don Coombs asked if the MEO can visit the residents of Noad Road with a letter to explain the plan and ask for input.

Skinner made a motion for the MEO to do just that. Councillor Brendan Chafe seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.

Coombs allowed a directional change on Queen’s Road may be beneficial when it comes to snow-clearing. “We’re not driving snow onto Harvey Street, so it’s also better for our operators,” he said.

Skinner agreed. “At least when we get out on Noad Street, we can take the snow and bring it down the road, whereas now when we dump it out, we’re dumping it in front of somebody’s house,” he said. “And if there’s a car there, that presents a problem.”
