Reinstating Town’s Canada Day celebration went well, says Newman

The reinstatement of Canada Day celebrations in Spaniard’s Bay was a big success, says the councillor who pushed for the event.
Councillor Debbie Newman had raised the idea back in May, noting it had been quite a while since the town celebrated the national holiday with events of its own.
In response, the rest of council agreed to provide $2,000 towards the celebration, with the money to come from a Guaranteed Investment Certificate that had been taken out by a former special events committee some years ago. Council agreed the money would go towards buying refreshments, hiring entertainment, and giving out prizes for the best decorated bikes, strollers, hats, and so on.
“Canada Day was a huge success,” Newman reported at this month’s public council meeting. “I’d like to thank everybody that came, thank the volunteers, the fire department for the truck rides, the summer program staff for coming in on their day off to help us out.”
Newman also thanked the entertainers, including the band, balloon-twister, and the person who brought along the Newfoundland pony.
“Also, we had a big presence of RCMP officers on the field, which was nice to see,” added Newman, noting some of the officers brought their children, who were able to partake in the activities such as the fire truck and pony rides.
Newman said the next public event will be the town’s Family Fun Day on August 3, which is in need of some volunteers.
Newman suggested the Town solicit its residents for any new ideas for the festivities.
