CBS council takes another step towards  building community centre

By Mark Squibb

Though it will be some time before any shovels are in the ground, CBS council this week took the next step in the construction of a new community centre.

Councillor Melissa Hardy moved to hire Pinnacle Engineering for design and tendering services of Gateway Lot 2 at a cost of $57,700, plus HST.

“This is the next phase required in getting the site ready for the location that council has selected for the community centre,” the Ward-4 councillor explained.

The Gateway Commercial Park, a 130-acre, Town-owned site at the top of Legion Road, was selected as the site of the estimated $50 million recreation centre back in July 2022, though a lot number was not specified at that time.

Lot two is located across and down from Kent’s, near where Gateway Drive meets the Kiwanis Park trail.

Mayor Darrin Bent and councillor-at-large Rex Hillier both declared conflicts of interest on the matter. A date has not yet been set for construction of the facility, and construction remains dependent on the availability of funding, interest rate percentages, and estimated construction costs.
