CBS and towns in Conception Bay Centre and North are among the communities that will see a sprinkling of new public housing units according to Paul Pike, the Minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.

Pike, who is also the Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, said the Province will spend $80 million on 91 housing projects that will see the construction of approximately 900 affordable rental homes throughout the island and Labrador.

Four of the rental projects will be in CBS, accounting for 44 rental homes.

Carbonear will be home to four rental projects, accounting for 35 rental homes, while nearby Bay Roberts will be home to four projects accounting for 43 homes.

Clarkes Beach will also see a number of properties constructed, with a total of 20 rental homes coming from three different projects.

In Conception Bay Centre, Holyrood will see 24 new homes, Colliers will see 8 homes, and Avondale will see 8.

The projects include units built through new construction, conversion of commercial buildings into apartments, and additions to existing residences. Priority for the homes will be given to seniors, young adults, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, newcomers, women and children fleeing violence and the homeless.

When government called for proposals for the rental homes back in June, it set the rental rates at between $665 and $880 a month.
