Some young soccer players will be taking a chilly plunge into the water later this month.

In an effort to raise money to offset travel costs associated with the group’s various tournaments, the CBS Soccer Association’s Girls Under 13 group will kickstart the first ever Strikers’ Shivery Swim. It is set to take place on Sunday, March 17 on the beach behind the soccer clubhouse in Topsail, featuring 23 players and four parents.

The players, aged 11-13, will travel to Burin and Corner Brook over the coming months to showcase their skills on the field. However, such endeavours do not come free of charge, and so the team decided to put its own twist on the popular ‘polar bear swim.’

Team manager Tracey Carroll said the monies raised will also help the girls buy gear for the upcoming season.

“The girls aren’t nervous, but the parents certainly are,” Carroll said of the event, laughing.

Those looking to sponsor a player can donate as much or as little money as they wish. Email transfers can be sent to cbssocceroffice@gmail.com, or over the phone by calling 834-1850. Carroll said the group will also accept donations at the event, which is set to take place between 2:30 and 3:30 that afternoon.

Carroll noted the dip is weather dependent, stating that although the water will inevitably be cold, they hope to avoid seriously low temperatures or bad weather conditions.
