CBS looking to identify unregistered businesses

Like its neighbour in Holyrood, the council in Conception Bay South is turning its attention to unregistered businesses that are operating without permits and not paying municipal taxes.

Councillors Paul Connors and Joshua Bartlett levied the warning on Tuesday.

“As a council we are focused on economic development within our town,” Connors said. “But unfortunately, there are a number of businesses that are operating without a permit. Our staff have identified approximately 75 businesses that are operating without a permit. We’re going to start off by sending them a letter and asking them to come in and register as a business, and hopefully we will get the cooperation needed. Our goal is to have all businesses operating within our town compliant with our business regulations.”

Barrett said the Town provides a lot of different programs and services for its residents and businesses. To take advantage of the programs specifically designed for businesses, a business must he registered, he added.

“That is an even further incentive for local businesses to register among the myriad of benefits that will be noted in the letter that will be mailed out to you shortly,” Barrett said. “I just want to remind folks as well that we’re keeping tabs on compliance through a variety of ways.”
