I trust that all the backlash from the community will make you reconsider this irresponsible act

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

I cannot really believe that the town council in Holyrood has raised taxes this year.

With inflation out of control, interest rates rising, and after three years of Covid, with all the stress and uncertainty that disease has caused and will continue to cause, the council has added another financial burden on its citizens.

When individual citizens realize there needs to be changes to their finances and there is already too much debt, they usually cut back on their own spending, not run to the bank to borrow more and expect others to pay for it. I think the council should have considered this route before burdening the residents of this town with such a financial hit.

I am a senior who has been on a fixed income for 12 years with no raises in that period of time. I am not the only person in Holyrood in this situation. There are many retirees living here and many of them are already hurting financially. For you to raise taxes to balance your budget without cutting spending substantially is irresponsible and shows that you could care less about the residents of the town.

I trust that all the backlash from the community will make you reconsider this irresponsible act.

Please read this along with other correspondence regarding your raising of taxes at your next council meeting.

Sincerely,

Bruce Lane,

Holyrood
