Bartlett decries expulsion from 50+ group

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

On May 4, 2022, the Worsley Park 50+ Club held its election of Officers. Forty-two members were present, including Ms. Elaine Hutchings, Avalon Director for the NL 50+ Federation.

Joe Walsh, a lifetime member, who has to use a walker, and sometimes a wheelchair to bring him in, arrived late and was denied the right to vote. People have  not forgotten that.

I nominated Geri Weir for president with the promise I would run for election as Vice President.

Elected was Geraldine Weir, President, Wilfred Bartlett, Vice President, Margaret Careen, Treasurer, Viola Dawe, Secretary, Eva Bishop, 2nd Vice President, and directors Mary Corbett from Holyrood, Phyllis Bishop and Bill Cox (now deceased). Later the President appointed, not elected, Shirley Miller and Jeanette Snelgrove. I was happy all my friends (I thought) were there, good people to get things done.

On May 4, 2022, I was elected as Vice President by the Worsley Park 50+ Club membership.

On January 11, 2023, there was another meeting of the board with Avalon Director Elaine Hutchings from the NL 50 Plus Federation, Geri Weir, President, Viola Dawe, Secretary, Eva Bishop, 2nd Vice President, directors Phyllis Bishop and Mary Corbett from Holyrood, also present were Shirley Miller and Jeanette Snelgrove who were appointed by the President.

Later on the same day at a card game it was announced by the president with Elaine Hutchings at her side, that the treasurer had resigned and right out of the blue, that the board (six people) had removed me from the position of Vice President without any explanation of what I had done. Two top board members gone in one day.

To say I was humiliated would be an understatement, especially after being a volunteer for 45 years.

Wilfred Bartlett
