Town of CBS recognized for efforts to save energy

The Town of CBS has won an award from Take Charge NL for its efforts to save energy.

Energy Specialist Corinne Roberts presented a Luminary Award to Mayor Darin Bent at last week’s council meeting.

“The Luminary Award recognizes companies, organizations, communities and individuals all across Newfoundland and Labrador who are taking brilliant steps to use energy wisely and inspiring others to do the same,” Roberts said.

A component of that is the Community Impact Award, which recognizes a city or town that has excelled in energy efficiency, she added. That’s the one that was won by the Town of CBS for 2021.

“The Town of CBS has been working hard to make your municipal building and operations more efficient,” said Roberts. “In 2021, you partnered with Take Charge and upgraded your lighting to L.E.D., you installed heat pumps in your arenas, fire stations and several other community buildings. You also promote energy efficiency within the community by campaigning on social media and by fostering partnerships with educational facilities in the area.”

Mayor Bent thanked Roberts for the award.

“That’s excellent. As a town you are always cognizant of energy and the cost of energy,” said Bent. “And being able to do something that gets you recognized by Newfoundland Power with a Luminary Award is fantastic. So, thank you to the Town staff and everybody involved in public works and engineering and so forth who work to make sure that happens. It’s something to be very proud of here in the town… We’re going to continue to strive to improve each and every year.”

Take Charge NL is a joint initiative of Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland Hydro to promote energy efficiency and raise awareness about the various grants that are available at times to help homeowners retrofit their properties.
