Carbonear Fire Hall to get a lick of asphalt

By Mark Squibb/November 25, 2022

Carbonear councillors during last week’s meeting approved a motion to ask Concord Paving to complete repairs to the asphalt at the Fire Hall at a cost of $7,400, plus HST.

Both Mayor Frank Butt and Deputy Mayor Sam Slade asked council whether they would be in conflict in voting on the manner. Butt is an active member of the Fire Department, while Slade is an honorary member.

The conversation of conflict of interest has been resounding in the council chambers the last few meetings, as council has grappled with new provincial legislation governing municipal councils.

Council determined the men were not in conflict, though not without some discussion first.

“I don’t think either one of you are in conflict,” ventured councillor Ray Noel. “I know we need some training and information on the new legislation, but until we get that clarification, I guess we operate on the old one. As neither one of you are a director or on the executive, I feel neither one is in conflict.”

Noel made a motion to that effect, which council approved, and the motion to greenlight the pavement repairs also passed.
