Mystery builds around Carbonear development

By Mark Squibb/October 14, 2022

If you’re wondering what’s going on in behind the Dairy Queen in Carbonear, you’re out of luck.

Deputy Mayor Slade asked the question during this week’s public council meeting.

“I’ve noticed that the land in behind Dairy Queen looks like it’s been graded off, and it looks like something is going to go there,” said Deputy Mayor Sam Slade. “And somebody is after asking me, and I can’t answer them.”

“I think there’s a lot of rumours going around, but I don’t think it’s our place to say what’s going there,” answered councillor Danielle Doyle. “That announcement would come from the developers and the people who are putting those structures there. And I would imagine they’re probably not in a place, according to their planning, where they’re ready to make an announcement yet. But I agree, there’s much anticipation and all kinds of rumours going around. I don’t think there’s any point in speculating at this point.”

Doyle added it’s great that there appears to be at least one building and what appears to be a road network being built. She noted the construction, coupled with the opening of Starbucks on Columbous Drive and new housing starts, is a sign of good things to come.

“Hopefully, on a go forward basis, it’s ‘onwards and upwards,’” said the councllor.

Town CAO Cynthia Davis added, further to Doyle’s point, that there is no actual news for council to share yet even if they so desired.

“There is a development permit issued just for some different groundwork, but there is no development application at this point for the new development there,” said Davis. “So, there is nothing that can be shared at this point.”
