Paradise to spend over a million dollars on new snowplows

By Mark Squires/September 23, 2022

The weather change this month from sweltering heat to crisp Fall air seemingly overnight was a stern reminder that snow is on the horizon.

Paradise’s Public Works Department budgeted for three new tandem dump trucks with snow-clearing equipment for 2022, and the Town recently requested tenders for the supply and delivery of the three trucks.

At the tender close, three companies submitted bids.

The lowest bid received, from Western Star Trucks Newfoundland Ltd., priced the trucks at $328,410, HST included, per unit, for a total of $1.133 million.

The motion passed unanimously during the September 6 meeting of council, but the new trucks won’t be pushing snow this winter. Council expects to take delivery of the vehicles next summer.

Councillor Patrick Martin noted the cost is $67,000 under what staff had estimated.

“This is good, we never usually see things under budget,” said Martin. “Staff did a really good job budgeting for this.

Councillor Larry Vaters asked whether the trucks would be replacing older trucks, and Martin said he would have to double check with staff.

Martin also noted he was glad to make the purchase with a local company.
