Report lists Carbonear residents’ priorities

By Mark Squibb/September 2, 2022

You may have already heard that Carbonear is in the midst of developing a new strategic plan, a plan they hope to release this December.

Earlier this August, the Town published the ‘What We Heard…..’ document, a summary of the town’s strategic plan public consultation sessions. From that, it was clear that top of mind for residents are infrastructure and maintenance improvements, economic development, recreational and cultural services, and better public communication.

The Town reached about 850 residents through surveys and focus groups. According to the document, 46.6 percent of survey respondents were ages 40-59, 18 percent were 30-29, and 17.5 percent were 60-69 (equalling about 82 percent of all respondents.)

According to the survey, residents cited trails and green spaces, quality of life, the downtown core, and recreational and cultural attractions as some of the best things Carbonear has to offer. More specifically, proximity to St. John’s and the local hospital also make Carbonear a great place to live, according to residents.

On the converse, road improvements, infrastructure and maintenance topped the lists in the ‘could be better’ category.

Strategic Plans are often touted as being ‘living documents,’ a phrase Carbonear staff use on the Town’s website, that guide decision making in the years to come. If, for example, a strategic plan identifies a need for road improvements, council will prioritize road improvements in the coming years.
