RNC to lay ‘sound traps’ for attention seekers

By Craig Westcott/August 19, 2022

CBS councillor Joshua Barrett has joined the growing call for action against loud motorcycles, cars and other vehicles that have installed after market exhaust systems loud enough to split the ears of other drivers and pedestrians.

“We’ve certainly had some great weather this summer and a lot of folks are out enjoying it, but unfortunately there are folks in our town whose enjoyment comes at the expense of others,” Barrett told his fellow councillors during their regular public meeting Tuesday. “I’ve received a number of complaints from residents on the volume of loud vehicles throughout the town, especially motorcycles, that are out riding all day and overnight, especially when folks are trying to sleep. These motorcycles have after market mufflers and they create excessive noise which is causing a disturbance for residents, especially when they travel in groups.”

Barrett said the provincial Highway Act prohibits the use of such aftermarket and altered mufflers and that police have the ability to stop them and order an inspection.

“You could be fined and your vehicle could be impounded,” Barrett added. “I just want to let residents know that we have heard your concerns and that we have spoken to the RNC and the RNC will be establishing what I will call a loud vehicle trap at various points throughout Conception Bay South. So, consider yourself warned. If you’re driving a loud vehicle, a motorcycle or any other (loud) vehicle throughout our community you may be subject to a fine.”

Barrett said he has a motorcycle license himself and knows the joy of riding up and down the shore on a sunny day.

“It’s a great summer activity and go and enjoy our community, but please be respectful that your enjoyment might cause a disturbance for other people, and let’s just be mindful of that,” he pleaded.

Mayor Darrin Bent seconded that thought.

“It’s about being considerate of other people,” said the mayor. “Yes, enjoy your ride, but just be mindful of where you are and what you’re doing and who might be affected by it.”
