Carbonear lends a hand, both near and far

By Mark Squibb/May 5, 2022

The Town of Carbonear has approved two requests for donations, one to help an organization the next town over, and another to help folks halfway around the world.

The Splash Centre in Harbour Grace had requested financial assistance, and Carbonear responded in turn with an offer of a $200 donation.

Recently, the Splash Centre, which meets in the former Harbour Grace Primary School, had become a literal splash centre, as a leaky roof threatened to shuttle the youth community network, which provides young people with meals, recreation, mental health support, tutoring, job opportunities, computer access, and everything in between.

Work has begun on the new roof.

Th donation request was a general request for assistance towards operational costs.

The Town also received a request from the Red Cross for funds to help provide food, water, medical supplies, and health support for Ukrainians as Russian forces continue their invasion of the country.

The Town provided a $700 donation to that cause.

The invasion of Ukraine has prompted many councils to fly the Ukrainian flag on their town flag poles. Carbonear has been flying the Ukrainian flag from the Pergola green space flagpole.
