Paradise to host elite Atlantic hockey tourney

by Mark Squibb/April 14, 2022

The Town of Paradise is officially home to one of Atlantic Canada’s most elite youth hockey tournaments.

“This year the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is the host province of the Under 18 AAA Atlantic Hockey Tournament,” said councillor Elizabeth Laurie during last week’s meeting. “This tournament is the highest level of hockey for this age group, and Paradise has been asked to be the host facility for this prestigious event. Hockey NL had requested that the Paradise Double Complex, Rink B, be allocated solely to the tournament from April 21 to the 24.”

The Town will receive 30 percent of ticket sales, as per the box office policy, in addition to $4,675 in revenue from ice time rentals generated from 27-and-a-half hours of ice time, at a rate of $170 an hour.

All of council, except Mayor Dan Bobbett, who declared a conflict of interest as a family member was helping with the organization of the event, voted in favour of hosting the tournament in an e-poll circulated on March 23.

Council then ratified the decision during last week’s regular public meeting.
